Cardiff’s Christmas pantomime postponed until next year

The New Theatre in Cardiff turned their lights red in show of support.

The New Theatre’s annual Pantomime is a seasonal highlight for over 50,000 people each year and has been a regular traditional offering during the theatre’s 114 year history.

Following discussions with our producing partner, Qdos Pantomimes, it was concluded that due to the ongoing restrictions and the expected timescale for their relaxation it is impossible for the theatre to deliver a viable pantomime season this year.

The New Theatre has confirmed that Aladdin will be rescheduled to the new dates of Saturday 4 December 2021 to Sunday 2 January 2022.

A spokesperson for the New Theatre said “We would like to thank all our customers for their understanding at this time and we will be in contact by email within the next couple of days to discuss booking options. We have begun the complex process of transferring all bookings to next year and would like to ask customers not to contact us at the current time”.

He continued: “As one of Wales’ oldest theatres, we recognise that our annual pantomime is a seasonal highlight for many people and we are disappointed not to be able to present Aladdin this year. Looking to the future we are working hard to ensure we have an exciting programme of entertainment in place, and look forward to welcoming audiences back to our venues once it is safe to do so”

Last week, Cardiff’s New Theatre joined more than 20 Welsh venues including Principality Stadium, Cardiff Castle, Wales Millennium Centre and City Hall in lighting up red. The act of solidarity was part of a UK-wide day of action highlighting the urgent government help the sector needs during the Covid-19 crisis.

The live events industry across the UK came together to host a series of creative action to help save the live events and entertainment sector which is on the verge of collapsing without financial support from the government.
