A city-centre community enterprise market garden in the shadow of Cardiff Castle is producing and selling fresh cut salad leaves and distributing them to customers, shops and restaurants by bike – whilst working to promote positive mental health with a dedicated group of volunteers from all walks of life.

They got started with training from Plant and Share and received a £10,000 grant from Food For Life (the group that runs Plant & Share) in 2021.  To celebrate they are participating in Plant and Share month again to grow and distribute more healthy food and engaging children and the local community with a programme of events to highlight the benefits of growing and sharing food for health, wellbeing and the environment.

They have just expanded with an additional 700sq metres of land to expand their range of vegetable and fruiting and will be running veg gardening planting workshops growing green beans, runner beans and peas in a nearby community park.

Cardiff Salad Garden has been recognised as prime example of how Cardiff has embraced sustainable and healthy food to tackle issues around poverty, food insecurity, obesity and social deprivation. Today the city has been awarded been awarded Silver Sustainable Food Places status, becoming the first place in Wales and one of only six places in the UK to achieve the prestigious accolade, recognising the city’s pioneering work in promoting healthy and sustainable food.
