    Aberglasney launch competition for children to design a 25th birthday card

    To celebrate Aberglasney Gardens’ 25th birthday this summer the renowned plantsman’s paradise in Carmarthenshire is asking children to design a colourful birthday card front cover.

    Children of all ages are being encouraged to enter the competition to design an A4 birthday card front cover and to make it as colourful as the flowers around Aberglasney Gardens using pens / paint / crayons or colouring pencils.

    The winning child can bring a group of friends (or classmates if it is a school entry) to have a fun-packed and informative guided tour of Aberglasney and the group will be given a birthday party lunch prepared by the Tearooms.

    The winner will be announced on Aberglasney’s birthday, Thursday, 4 July 2024 and all entries will be on display for visitors to enjoy.

    Eleanor Keatley, Trustee and Chairman of Aberglasney’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Group said, “We want all ages to join us in celebrating this special landmark for Aberglasney. It’s always a pleasure to welcome the local schools to perform at the gardens during our Winter Fair and we have fun activities and trails for children of all ages during the school holidays. Your birthday card design can be in Welsh, English or bilingual. The most important aspect is for it to include lots of colourful flowers, just like those growing around the gardens throughout the year.”

    The deadline for entries to be sent in is 4pm on Friday, 14 June 2024. Post or hand deliver entries to: 25th birthday card competition, Aberglasney Gardens, Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, SA32 8QH.

    Each individual A4 birthday card front cover design must have written on the back:

    • Name and age of the child
    • Email address of an adult that can be contacted on behalf of the child
    • Name and contact details of the school (if entering via school)

    Aberglasney Gardens were opened to the public on 4 July 1999. It is described as one of Wales’ finest gardens with a fully restored Elizabethan Cloister Garden that is the only surviving example of its kind in the UK today. It was made famous by the BBC television series ‘A Garden Lost in Time’ which followed its restoration right up to the day it opened. The four episodes of the series will be available for everyone to watch during their visits to the gardens in June and July.

    To celebrate Aberglasney’s 25th anniversary of being open to the public, visitors are invited to enjoy an exciting array of events and experiences over the coming months. Members and visitors are advised to regularly check Aberglasney’s website: www.aberglasney.org and social media pages for event details and tickets.

    On Aberglasney’s birthday, 4 July, there will be singing, dancing and entertainment as well as, of course, birthday cake. For the weekend of 6 and 7 July, visitors are allowed to ‘step back in time and visit Aberglasney like it’s 1999’ as the entry fee to the gardens will be rolled back to the price charged when it first opened in 1999 of £3.95 and celebratory performances from local choirs and musicians will ring out around the grounds.
