As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is encouraging people across Gwent to take simple but vital steps to protect themselves: checking their breasts regularly, recognising the early signs of cancer, and attending screening appointments.
Each year in Gwent, more than 5,000 people are referred into the Breast Unit at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, and around 556 are diagnosed with breast cancer. The earlier cancer is found, the better the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
Louise Davidson, Lead Breast Nurse Specialist at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board
“Your health matters to us,” said Louise Davidson, Lead Breast Nurse Specialist at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. “This October, we’re asking everyone to take a moment for themselves. We know how busy life can get, but looking after your own wellbeing is vital.  Making breast checks part of your routine is a small act of self-care that can make a big difference.”
    Know what’s normal for you
“Take a few minutes regularly to check your breasts. You’re looking for anything that feels unusual for you – a change in shape, size, or skin, a lump, pain that doesn’t go away, or any nipple changes. Most changes aren’t cancer, but if something feels different, please speak to your GP.” Said Louise.
Mammograms: a simple step with a big impact
“If you’re aged 50-70, you’ll be invited for a mammogram every three years. It’s quick, safe, and can find cancers long before they can be seen or felt. Attending your appointment really could save your life. If you’ve missed one, it’s never too late to get back on track – contact the Breast Screening team at [email protected] or by calling 029 2039 7222. It is important that you do not wait for three years until you are invited again.
“Early action really can save lives.”
This October, the Health Board is asking people across Gwent to take time for themselves:
    Check. Attend. Protect.
