5 Options for a Different Night Out in Cardiff

Cardiff is one of those cities that has it all. From the oldest record store in the world to one of the most beautifully located open-air museums in the country, there’s no shortage of things to do on a day out in the city. But what about when the sun goes down, and it’s time for a night out? Sure, you could head for the cinema and take in yet another Hollywood flick, or you could dine at one of the many chain restaurants that dot the city. But where’s the fun in that?

As we said, Cardiff has it all, and that includes some excellent options for a night out with a difference. Whether it’s a few hands of poker with friends or spending a quiet romantic evening learning about all things science (yes, really!), we think we’ve found something for everyone on our list below. So, buckle up and let’s get this night out in the city started.

    Have a Few Laughs

A night of comedy is always a night well spent, and you’ll find some great laughs at Porter’s. Cardiff’s most famous ‘hidden gem’ has no signage outside so it’s possible that you could walk past it easily. Then again, you probably won’t, as there’s usually a lively atmosphere inside that’s impossible to miss. In case you’re wondering, it’s right by the Citrus Hotel aka The Big Sleep Hotel.

They have open-mic nights, which can be a little hit and miss as all open-mic nights can be. The Comedy Den is what we’re after here, as it’s the best night for bellyaching laughs. In truth, we’d recommend any night of the week at Porter’s because it is that wonderful of a place with incredibly friendly staff.

    Head for the Casino

There are now three casinos in Cardiff, each of which offers regular poker games, slots and roulette. You might wonder what’s so great about a night at the casino, but if you’ve never been, then you’re missing out. The Grosvenor, Rainbow Casino and Les Croupiers are all excellent spots to try your hand at poker (bad pun, sorry), and all three serve delectable food and drinks. Food, a few drinks, and the chance to win a little cash? That sounds like a great night out.

Now, if you’re planning on hitting the slot machines, then you’re good to go. However, if you fancy trying your luck at poker, then make sure you understand how to play Texas Hold ‘em. It’s the most popular form of poker and the one that you’ll most likely end up playing at any casino. It’s worth taking the time to read up on those rules so that you can feel like a proper Matt Damon in “Rounders.”

    Learn Science Stuff at Night

Did you know that Techniquest is the U.K.’s longest-established science centre? Perhaps you did, but did you also know that it’s not only a place for school tours? That’s right; The museum opens its doors to adults only in their After-Hours events held throughout the year.

After Hours allows adults full access to the museum in the late evening, and incredibly, there’s a fully licensed bar on-site. Yes, you can wander through the exhibits with a drink and even enjoy a bit of stargazing on occasion. People who have gone describe it as a playground for kids, which sounds amazing to us!

    Salsa the Night Away

If you’ve ever thought about trying a little Latin American dancing, then Salsa Social at Revolucion De Cuba is the place for you. This fantastic restaurant chain is all throughout the U.K. (so yes, it’s a chain), but we’re not going here for the food, although the tapas are quite tasty.

Every Wednesday night, there’s a salsa social, and there’s no cover charge to attend. It’s usually packed with an energetic crowd eager to get on the dance floor even on a Wednesday night. The great thing about this night out is that you don’t need to have any experience in dancing to join in on the fun. Once you have the will to learn, the staff at this venue will show you the moves gladly and get you up to speed in no time.

Learn How to Craft the Perfect Cocktail

You may think you can get away with mixing up a quick dirty martini in the kitchen, but if you want to learn how to make a real bona fide cocktail, it’s off to Ten Mill Lane you go. One of the most popular clubs and cocktail bars in the city, their motto of ‘You Are Welcome’ goes a long way to explain how you’ll feel at this place.

Their cocktail master classes are exceptional, with your choice of class determining the cocktails that you can learn how to make. Choose the Moonshiner, and you can make classic drinks like the Manhattan or a Whisky Sour. Opt for Hemingway’s Cuban Story, and it’s mojitos, daiquiris, and piña coladas, among others. Your class includes one welcome cocktail, two cocktails with the class and a personal bartender for the duration. It could be a perfect first date option.

As you can see: From poker at the casino to learning all about science with a cold beer in hand, there’s something for everyone in the city of Cardiff. So, forget bingo night down at the community hall or a pint and packet of crisps at the local. It’s time to get into the city and do something outside your comfort zone. Anyone for a night at the museum? Doesn’t that sound like a great name for a film?
