Work to reduce the risk of flooding at Painter’s Row in Treherbert

RCT Council will undertake an important scheme to install a new culvert inlet system to reduce the risk of flooding at Painter’s Row in Treherbert – while also repairing infrastructure damage caused by Storm Dennis.

Work will begin from Monday, November 2, to install a new headwall, debris screen and channel structures in the existing watercourse – while establishing a formal access to the channel and inlet. The scheme will reduce the risk of culvert blockages, and ensure future maintenance is more easily accessible.

DT Contracting (south west) Ltd has been appointed to carry out this work, which will last for around two weeks but could be extended if there is poor weather. The Council has benefitted from Welsh Government funding to contribute to this scheme.

The works access will be from Charles Street, but all local roads will remain open. Residents are asked not to park along the joining lane to the nearby fields, as the contractor requires access for supplies and machinery. The delivery of heavy machinery and large materials to the site will cause some local disruption, which will be minimised as much as possible.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The Council has welcomed a contribution from Welsh Government to support this local scheme in Treherbert, which will reduce the risk of culvert blockages during heavy rainfall – and reduce the flood threat to the Painter’s Row area. An important element of this scheme is to provide a formal access to enable future maintenance of the system to be more easily achieved.

“In response to Storm Dennis and other severe weather events this year, the Council investigated 1,500 reports of flooding, inspected 30km of watercourse assets and removed 1,000 tonnes of debris. The Painter’s Row work is the latest flood alleviation scheme to be progressed – including major work at Rhydyfelin, Fernhill, Pentre and Trecynon as well as completed schemes at Plantation Road in Abercynon and Bryn Ifor in Mountain Ash in the summer.

“From Monday, residents will notice site activity to deliver the Painter’s Row scheme in the coming weeks. There will be some inevitable disruption for site deliveries – but access to local roads will be maintained and the Council will work closely with its contractor to carry out the work as efficiently as possible.”
