Staff and pupils at Llanharan Primary School are now benefitting from new and improved facilities after a significant extension block and outdoor learning areas were completed by RCT Council.

The improvements, jointly funded by RCT Council and Welsh Government, has delivered brand new facilities and allowed the infant class sizes at the school to be reduced to fewer than 30 pupils.

The scheme has provided a new extension block that includes two new classrooms with 21st Century facilities, a kitchen and new pupil toilets.  A new hygiene room providing specialist facilities for pupils with disabilities will be completed and brought into use in due course. Externally, the investment has also provided the school with new outdoor learning areas, as well as a new school yard and a soft play area.

Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services, said: “I am very pleased to see the staff and pupils at Llanharan Primary School now enjoying their excellent new facilities. The scheme has benefitted from Welsh Government’s Infant Class Size Reduction Grant, aiming to create smaller class sizes as a key action to benefit primary pupils in their learning, and to support teachers.

“The extension has provided a learning environment fit for the 21st Century, as Llanharan Primary becomes the latest Rhondda Cynon Taf school to receive new facilities. Through 21st Century Schools funding, new schools were built in Porth, Tonypandy, Tonyrefail and Cwmaman in 2018/19, while Hirwaun Primary has most-recently benefited from a £10.2m new building. Future projects are being progressed for Cwmdare, Penywaun and Taff’s Well.

“I’d like to thank the staff and pupils at Llanharan Primary School for their cooperation while the new facilities were being built. They are now there for the school to enjoy for many years to come, and are aimed at improving education outcomes for our young people.”
