Crumlin High Level Primary achieve ‘Plastic Clever School’ status

As a result of all the hard work the children and staff, Crumlin High Level Primary School have recently been awarded with a ‘Plastic Clever School’ award.

The campaign run by Kids Against Plastic is committed to helping schools succeed in their efforts to fight single-use plastic and have created all of the resources a school (with pupils leading the way) needs.

Becoming a ‘Plastic Clever School’ requires a school to take appropriate action needed to reduce their use of single-use plastic, including the BIG 4 plastic polluters (cups + lids, straws, bottles and bags), plus cutlery and crockery.

The school chose to focus on lowering the amount of single use plastic within our school, switching to recycled plastic straws, recycling crisp packets and plastic bags. Our topic name was #PlasticHeroes.  The staff and children worked hard using surveys, advertising, You-tube videos, songs and posters culminating in a protest march around Crumlin (supported by PCSO’s) on Wednesday 26th May to protest and make the community aware of using use less plastic.

Since receiving the award, Kids Against Plastic have asked the school to participate in a case study of good practice due to being thoroughly impressed at what the school had managed to achieve.

Mrs Catherine Mansell, Head Teacher said, “During our first half term of the summer, we set out to become a ‘Plastic Aware’ school with the aim to eventually become ‘Plastic Clever’. As a result of the dedication, perseverance and hard work of Crumlin High Level we have gone and done it!”

Cllr Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Learning and Leisure commented, “Well done to Crumlin High Level Primary School for their amazing effort and commitment to becoming a ‘Plastic Clever School’. This is a fantastic achievement and all who were involved should be extremely proud for setting a great example to other schools.

I wish you all the best in your upcoming case study and look forward to hearing more of your good practice.”
