Senedd to debate four-day working week pilot

The Welsh Senedd will debate going ahead with a four-day working week pilot in Wales today (Wednesday) after a debate was secured by Plaid Cymru.

The debate motion proposed by Siân Gwenllian MS calls on the Welsh Government to establish a four-day working week pilot in Wales to explore the benefits to all Welsh workers, the economy and the environment.

Since the Covid pandemic, the four-day working week has gathered momentum and popularity with Government’s in Scotland, Spain and Ireland all planning national-level pilots of a four-day week with no loss of pay.

Numerous studies have shown that a four-day week with no loss of pay boosts productivity and improves workers well being.
Joe Ryle, Director of the 4 Day Week Campaign, said:

“The time has come for Wales to follow Scotland and Spain’s example by moving ahead with four-day week trials.

“The four-day week with no loss of pay is good for workers, good for the economy and good for the environment.

“We invented the weekend a century ago and it’s time for an update. The 9-5, 5 day working week is no longer fit for purpose.”
