Work begins on new Caerphilly play facilities

Work has started to bring new outdoor facilities for children and young people to the Bedwas and Trethomas areas of Caerphilly.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is upgrading the existing children’s play area at Bryn Park, as well as installing a new multi-use games area.  The new facilities are being funded through the council’s Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) programme, along with a contribution of £20,000 from Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Council.

The council’s WHQS programme has already seen over £260 million invested into tenants’ homes and local communities.  This investment has included delivering a wide range of environmental improvements throughout the county borough, such as play areas, skate parks, landscaping and additional car parking.

Cllr Lisa Phipps, the council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and local ward member, said “We are now nearing completion of our WHQS programme, which has seen the largest ever single investment into our housing stock.  Throughout the programme we’ve worked with communities to identify their priorities for environmental improvements in their area.”

Local resident Michelle Bridges commented “We are extremely pleased to see that the Bedwas Trethomas and Machen area are now going to benefit not only from a new park and outdoor gym, but also a new state of the art MUGA.  All this would not have been possible without the support and the funding that has been made available to the area from the Bedwas Trethomas Machen Community Council. I’m sure I speak on behalf of the local community and would like to pass on our thanks.”

Cllr Phipps continued “By working in partnership with Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Council we’ve been able to enhance the improvements in this area and provide outdoor facilities for a range of ages.”

Chair of the Community Council Cllr Chris Morgan added “I am proud that our Council is able to support this project for the benefit of our residents, I am looking forward to seeing a lot more done in other wards.”
