Sherman Theatre to stay open despite post-Christmas restrictions

The Sherman Theatre will remain open after Christmas as it prepares to make changes in response to the new Alert Level 2 restrictions.

Yesterday, the First Minister for Wales, Mark Drakeford, announced new measures from 6am on Boxing Day to help keep Wales safe.

The measures are a revised version of Alert Level 2 to respond to the new omicron variant and are designed to help keep businesses open and trading and protect customers and staff. However, the rule of 6 and 2m distancing has seen a number of theatres close their productions early.

In an email sent to customers today, the Sherman Theatre said:

“As you may be aware, the First Minister has announced, in response to spread of the Omicron variant, that from 26 December social distancing will come into force once again in theatres. Having looked at the situation, we can confirm that you will be able to see A Christmas Carol and look forward to welcoming you to a performance.”

However, they may adjust where customers are seated to allow for additional distancing between groups.

    This includes:

    • Reallocating seats across the auditorium with customers warned that they will likely be moved to new seats
    • As the rule of 6 now applies, the Sherman may need to split larger parties into two and they will be in touch with customers by phone if they need to do this
    • In a few limited cases they may need to move your booking to another performance (to ensure social distancing is achieved)

The Sherman Theatre has said that they will endeavour for your new seats to be as close as possible to your original preference.

When Wales 247 visited a few weeks ago, the Sherman Theatre had already introduced spaced out seating in its auditorium to separate groups. We noted that it was quite innovative at the time as many other theatres in the area hadn’t adopted a similar approach. You can read our review of A Christmas Carol here.

The email also stated that customers don’t need to do anything and that the theatre will be in touch:

“You do not need to take any action. We will either send you your new tickets no later than 24 hours prior to the performance you have booked for or we will call if we need to make changes (splitting a larger party or moving to a new date).

“If you feel that you are no longer able to attend the performance please contact the Box Office on 029 2064 6900 to request a refund or a credit against your account.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

As the only Christmas theatre performance going ahead after Boxing Day, this has just become the hottest ticket in the Cardiff.
