Do you love history? Would you love to learn more about your local area, study artefacts, get your hands dirty and learn real archaeologist’s skills?

A new club for young people aged 8 -16 interested in archaeology is being launched for Neath Port Talbot on Saturday 19th February.

Based at Neath Library, the club will provide an exciting opportunity to involve young people in archaeology, local history and heritage by creating fun ways to investigate the past.

Sessions will encourage a greater understanding of archaeology and the chance to get a hands-on experience of real excavations, handle artefacts and discover more about the area’s history through fun activities.

The sessions are free and will run once a month on a Saturday afternoon from 1-3pm. Most sessions will be run from Neath Library but there are plans for off site visits to museums, places of interest and archaeological excavations throughout the year.

Thanks to a grant from the Welsh Government’s Winter of Wellbeing fund, taster sessions will be provided throughout libraries in Neath Port Talbot during February half term.

Cllr Peter Rees, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture said: “I welcome the formation of the club which will provide a great opportunity to engage our young people in the history and archaeology of our local environment which has a long and very interesting past.”

If you are or know a budding archaeologist who would be interested in joining the club contact Harriet Eaton (Heritage Education Officer) at Neath Library on (01639) 644604 or email [email protected] for more information.
