Should You Concentrate On Your Poker Hand Or The Other Players?

Whether you are a seasoned poker player or a beginner to the game, most of us understand the importance of remaining focused. Depending on how you choose to play, this can be more difficult in some places than others. For example, some players prefer an online setting to avoid the distraction of a busy casino, while others enjoy the hustle and bustle and are able to zone out of it to some degree. Another question often asked relating to focus is whether a player should concentrate on their own poker hand or that of the other players. Below will explore the benefits and drawbacks of both approaches as well as how to stay concentrated regardless of your game strategy.

    Concentrating on your own hand

As with any sport or activity, sometimes the best way to be successful is to focus on yourself and not what others are doing. The same can be said of poker. As mentioned, most of us know that poker requires some amount of skill, concentration and patience and so the best way to do this can be to simply focus on your own hand and not be distracted by others. This can be particularly true if you are a beginner to the game as to improve you must work on your own strategy first.

To fully concentrate on your own hand, review your actions as you play and consider whether your decisions have been successful but don’t worry too much about past plays as you must move forward with your game. Consider what your body language and patterns may be suggesting to other players who are concentrating on you. If you are playing at a site like ggpoker.com you may wish to listen to music to help you focus and just focus on yourself and your hand. While being more mindful of your own hand and play can prove effective, it is of course also imperative to have an idea of what else is going on at the table and to take note of your opponents.

    Concentrating on other players

So how should you go about concentrating on other players’ hands? You may want to start off by just focusing on two players rather than the full table. This is the best approach to avoid being overwhelmed. By concentrating on their actions, you can get an idea of their patterns which will likely reveal more about them as a player and their style. You may be surprised by how much you can pick up on when you focus on the subtleties of other players’ actions. However, at the end of the day, you are never going to know for sure what hand the other players have so it is probably advisable to not solely focus on this. Paying attention is important but don’t get too bogged down in who might have what and instead put more energy into your own decisions.

    How to remain focused

Regardless of which technique you choose, there are some steps you can take to remain more focused. Resist the temptation to check your phone – even if you’ve folded you should still pay attention to the gameplay to further your knowledge of the other players and what you could have done differently.

Remember to pace yourself, sometimes a break from poker can work wonders for your concentration and when you come back to it you will not only be refreshed but also rediscover the fun of the game. A balance of concentrating on your own hand and others may prove the best technique for most so try out both approaches to see what works for you.
