A walk in memory of charity fundraiser Alun Roberts, known to some of his friends as Pinky, has raised £550 for Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.

Alun’s daughter Sara and his school friend, Duncan Foulkes, organised the 3.6-mile Pinky’s Walk on May 28 to support the charity that was very close to his heart.

Twenty-seven people, some travelling from Shropshire and Aberystwyth, turned out for the circular walk from Gregynog Hall, Tregynon to the nearby hamlet of Bwlchyffridd to raise £242 on the day. A JustGiving page raised another £308.

Alun, who lived in Llanfair Caereinion, lost his brave battle against prostate cancer on Christmas Day last year.

Duncan explained: “Pinky and I had planned to do the walk together after the pandemic, but we never managed to get around to it before he sadly passed away.

“It was great that Pinky’s family and so many of his friends, some from his school days, turned up on Saturday morning to support the walk. It was a fitting tribute to a man who touched so many lives in a positive way.

“Pinky’s family and I would like to thank everybody who took part in the walk, those who supported the fundraising generously and Gregynog Hall for allowing us to use the property as our base on Saturday.

“We hope to make Pinky’s Walk at least an annual event with a different walking route each time.”

Helen Knight, head of fundraising at Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, said: “The walk was an excellent way to remember Alun who was a great supporter and fundraiser for our charity. We are delighted with the sum raised in his memory which demonstrates just how much he was loved and respected in his community.”
