It’s due to take place on Sunday, September 18, with runners and spectators being asked to be mindful that people continue to mourn following the Queens death. A minute’s silence – announced on the PA system – will be held at the 11am start of the main race.
Similar events, like the Great North Run last weekend, have gone ahead with similar requests for those involved to be respectful. Other sports events, including rugby, football and cricket, are due to take place in the UK this Sunday.
The 41st staging of Swansea’s annual seafront 10k gets under starters’ orders at 11am this Sunday. Thousands of spectators will see around 4,500 runners take part.
Crowds are likely to start gathering at around 8.30am as around 4,000 runners get ready for the main race that heads west from the Recreation Ground to Oystermouth Square and then back along the Prom to Brynmill Lane before making its final turn back along Mumbles Road to the finish line at the Recreation Ground.
A number of other races will take place, including 1k and 3k races for juniors and a 10k wheelchair race. All races are full so people won’t be able to sign-up to take part on the day.
Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k has become a key part of Swansea’s event calendar.
“The race is one of the best of its kind in the UK and I know that this year it’ll take place in a respectful way.
“As well as elite runners, many other people of all ages will take to the course to raise money for so many worthwhile causes, conquer fitness challenges and beat personal bests. There’ll be a lovely, family-friendly atmosphere.”
He thanked residents affected by the road closures that keep runners and spectators safe during the event.
Cllr Francis-Davies said: “We’re keeping the road closures to a minimum and we’ve been keeping in touch with those who might be affected by them. They’re a necessary safety measure for an event of this size and we thank everybody for their understanding.”

The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k and Junior Races are taking place on Sunday, September 18.
Travel
Swansea Council has advised the public to arrive early as the car parks are well used and traffic builds up close to the main event car park. A detailed traffic management system has been put in place and road closures will come into operation from 7.30am, but traffic in the area will build up before this time. Parking
There will be free parking in the Recreation Ground and Lacrosse Field near St Helen’s Rugby Ground, and front and side of the Guildhall. Overflow spaces are located at the Civic Centre West Car Park. Please help organisers by arriving early as the car parks are well used and traffic builds up close to the main event car park.
Road Closures
The road closures are:
7.30am-4pm
- Mumbles Road closed in both directions between the traffic lights at the Slip near St Helen’s Rugby Ground and the bottom of Sketty Lane. The road will re-open as soon as it is deemed safe after the event equipment and infrastructure has been removed from the road.
10.30am-1.30pm
- Mumbles Road closed to westbound traffic between at the bottom of Sketty Lane to Mayals Road. Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane and diverted up Sketty Lane at this point.
- Mumbles Road closed in both directions between the bottom of Mayals Road and West Cross Roundabout. The road will re-open on a rolling basis as soon as it is deemed safe after the last runner and safety vehicles pass.
- Mumbles Road closed to westbound traffic between West Cross Inn Roundabout and Oystermouth Square. The road will re-open on a rolling basis as soon as it is deemed safe after the last runner and safety vehicles pass.
Notes
- For the safety of all involved, residents along Mumbles Road will be unable to gain vehicle entry onto parts of this road approximately 10.30am-3.30pm.
- The closures will be on a rolling basis and will be lifted as soon as it is safe to do so. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
- Bryn Road will have parking suspended to enable access for emergency vehicles.

The Route
The Admiral Swansea Bay has become one of the best races of its kind in the UK. The fast and flat course takes place along the beautiful sweep of Swansea Bay – perfect for both runners and spectators.
The Race
All races are full so you won’t be able to sign up to take part on the day.
Start of the 10k Race
Participants will need to make their way to Mumbles Road where they will be organised into waves, based on their predicted finish time. Participants should assemble for the race no less than 10 minutes prior to the race start. Race numbers must be secured to the front of race tops, and runners must complete the medical form on the back. Race numbers must not be folded or cut.
During the Race
Runners are asked to obey the directions of all event officials or course marshals. Water will only be available after the finish line. There will be a water station at the 5k point as per previous races.
After the Race
Participants will be asked to move through and out of the funnels once they have collected their water and medal. Staff will be on hand to assist runners.
Spectating
The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k is a good event for spectators. Should you wish to support the runners, please spread out along the whole length of the route.
Medical Advice & First Aid
First Aid is provided by St John Ambulance. They will be located throughout the course with a base at the finish area. Runners are advised to contact the nearest marshal or steward should a problem arise. All runners must complete the medical details form on the back of the race number. Participants are told not to run if they feel unwell or have just been unwell.
The Lost Children point is located within the Information Marquee, situated on the Race Village at the Rec.
There will be a variety of outlets selling food and drink near the finish area.
Event Safety & Security
With such a large event taking place, it’s important to stay safe, aware and vigilant at all times and to always keep personal belongings with you. There will be a limited baggage service this year.
Photos
Race photos will be taken throughout the course and will be available to buy via swanseabay10k.com two to three days after the race.
Race Results
Race results will be available following the race on the event website swanseabay10k.com. If runners have provided a mobile number, they’ll also receive a text with their result following the race.
