Resilient Roads scheme underway at two locations in Treherbert

The Council has begun important highway drainage improvements at Abertonllwyd Street and Dunraven Street in Treherbert – to reduce the risk of flooding to local properties during heavy rainfall.

The Resilient Roads scheme started in the week commencing Monday, September 12, and will be carried out over the next six weeks – due for completion by the end of October 2022, subject to fair weather. The scheme is being completed by the Council’s Streetcare team. It is split into two main locations, with works taking place at A4061 Abertonllwyd Street and the adjacent B4522 Dunraven Street.

At Abertonllwyd Street, three existing road drainage gullies will be upgraded, while an additional gully will be installed. Temporary traffic lights will need to be used on the A4061 in order to safely carry out some elements of the work. This scheme follows previous work in 2021/22 that inspected and cleaned the watercourse and culvert, located underneath the road at this location.

The work at Dunraven Street will also include site activity in a nearby rear lane. New drainage pipes and chambers will be installed, while existing drainage gullies will be upgraded and existing pipes will be lined. The rear lane will need to close to vehicles for a period of one week, with traffic lights needed on Dunraven Street to safely carry out some elements of the work.

The Council will make every effort to minimise disruption to residents, who are able to contact the site foreman with any queries. Letters were sent to local residents before the works got underway to give notice of the scheme.

The scheme is funded with contributions from Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Programme and the Council’s 2022/23 Capital Programme. Resilient Roads funding is available to Local Authorities to deliver targeted drainage improvements on areas of their road network that have a history of flooding.

The Council secured £4.9m to improve 16 locations in 2020/21, £2.75m for works at 19 locations in 2021/22, and £400,000 for 10 schemes in 2022/23. Important improvements being delivered this year include culvert upgrades at A4061 Rhigos Road which were completed in August, and drainage upgrades on the A4059 at Newtown, Mountain Ash, where works are currently ongoing.
