New city clean-up teams deployed to communities in Swansea

A brand new team of cleansing staff are making their way around Swansea, tackling a wide range of issues to help smarten up communities.

The aim of the new scheme is to give councillors in all wards an opportunity to direct teams to the areas within their communities, that councillors and residents would like tidied up.

Swansea Council has launched the new service as part of a commitment made earlier in the year when it listed a whole host of priorities to make Swansea a better city for residents and businesses.

Everything from grass cutting, litter picking, fly tipping clearance and cutting back overgrown bushes are on the list of duties the new team will carry out.

Cyril Anderson, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said the Cleansing Ward Operative Team will be dedicated to tackling street cleansing raised by councillors and residents.

He said: “The new scheme will very much be reliant on the involvement of residents and ward councillors who can provide information to the team about where they consider problems that need to be tackled.

“Each ward in Swansea will benefit from this new service and they will spend a few days in each of the communities, working hard to spruce up areas.

“Although we already have regular cleansing teams that work hard to clean public areas such as community shopping areas and local parks, these new teams will tackle parts of a community that may be off the beaten track in terms of regular cleansing work we do.

“It’ll be like the hugely-popular PATCH team which does a similar job for road improvements and repairs.

“Our aim is to provide a response team that go over and above what we already do.”
