A Swansea University student has been awarded the Quantum Advisory Prize 2018 for the most original contribution to mathematics following his in-depth study into Black Holes.
Mathematics graduate George Moore, 23, was presented with the award following the exceptional content of his final year dissertation far exceeding what is expected of a final year student.
The Quantum Advisory Prize – presented by pension experts Quantum Advisory – is awarded to those mathematics students who have exceled at Swansea University during their final year plus they get £1,000 to kick start their career.
Head of the Mathematics Department at Swansea University, Professor Biagio Lucini said: “George’s project explained the physics of Black Holes using an advanced branch of Mathematics known as Differential Geometry. While this mathematical characterisation of Black Holes is mostly well known in the field, it is still quite complicated to digest for an undergraduate. George has performed a fantastic job in understanding and in re-proposing it in simple and yet rigorous terms. His dissertation develops the physical intuition – crucial to grasp the behaviour of Black Holes – without sacrificing the mathematical correctness.”
George, from Bournemouth, said: “Receiving this award was extremely gratifying. I’d never had much of a physics background, so naturally I decided to torture myself by choosing a dissertation on Black Holes! I’m glad I did because it helped me to explore a creative and disciplined side of me that I’d never been in touch with before university. The downside of this is that I’m itching for the next challenge, so it’s difficult to relax and enjoy my free time!”

George has now found a job teaching at Explore Learning, which provides extra tuition for four to fourteen year olds across the UK. He continued: “My current position is really fulfilling work, but I’m craving a higher paced, deadline-oriented lifestyle, so the plan is to find a finance related job in London.”
