Swansea app hopes to boost traders and save residents money

A new app is being developed to help Swansea residents save money while supporting city centre traders and local businesses.

Linking initially to shops and other businesses like pubs and restaurants, the residents’ rewards app would include discounts and a loyalty scheme available exclusively for Swansea residents.

Swansea Council is helping fund the app in partnership with the Swansea Business Improvement District (BID), who will manage and run the app on behalf of partners and businesses.

Due for launch in the spring, the app will be available for download on smartphones and tablets. It could include competitions and giveaways as well as future savings and promotions.

Recommendations based on use and location would also feature, as well as QR codes and tips on popular visitor destinations throughout Swansea as a whole.

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea BID, said: “Businesses are still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic, so it’s important we do all we can to attract more shoppers and visitors to help improve the economy and vibrancy of the area.

“Working in close partnership with Swansea Council, this new initiative is aimed at increasing our city centre’s footfall and spend by giving local people access to a range of rewards, a loyalty scheme and discounts in our shops, restaurants, pubs and other businesses.

“We look forward to developing this new and exciting Swansea residents’ app in more detail so it can benefit as many local people and city centre businesses as possible.”

The app could also be rolled out in future to other high streets and district shopping centres across the city and county.

Cllr Andrea Lewis, Swansea Council’s Joint Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Service Transformation, said: “The cost of living crisis means many families are worried about how they’ll make ends meet, so we’re here to support them and our business community in any way we can.

“An app is the easiest way for residents to access this scheme as rewards and discounts are constantly changing, but we recognise there are some people who might be uncomfortable with using technology of this kind. That’s why we’ll be on hand to support these residents with signing-up to the app and tips on how to best use it.

“The launch of the app in the spring would follow-on from all the other cost of living support we’re providing, including grants to help people heat their homes this winter and the one-stop shop website we’ve put together that includes a huge amount of information on free events, support to find work and all the funding schemes available to eligible households.

“Further phases of the app would also benefit businesses in other parts of the city like high streets and community shopping centres as well as exclusive discounts on a range of services and events in the city.”
