Community groups from around Morriston are set to take part in a Victorian-themed Christmas event this weekend (November 26).
They include Morriston Primary School, the 20th Swansea (1st Morriston) Scout Group and Morriston Ladies Choir.
Others include the Tabernacle Morriston Choir, Morriston Camera Club, Glantawe Lions and St David’s Church.
Together with others and event organisers, they will help Saturday’s Morriston Victorian Christmas day build on the success of last year’s inaugural event.
The event is being organised by Swansea Council which already has a regeneration project focused on the celebrated Victorian landmark Morriston Tabernacle.
Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “It’s great to see so many community groups and their members taking part in the Morriston Victorian Christmas – it shows they support the area and want to help us build a bright future.
“The event – the day after Morriston’s annual Christmas lights switch-on and parade – will help focus attention on shopping locally. It will bring more people to town – and more business.
“Morriston has great heritage and we all want it to have a great future. We hope that local businesses, groups and individuals will throw their support behind the initiative. It should be a fun and colourful day!”
Shops are being invited to dress their windows in period style, entertainment is planned for Woodfield Street, the main shopping street – and residents will be asked to shop locally.
The plans include craft fairs, children’s entertainment, music performances and heritage exhibitions. Roads will remain open.
Morriston Primary School plan to create their own artwork of Tabernacle Chapel to celebrate its 150th anniversary. These will be framed and exhibited – then sold on the Victorian day.
The 20th Swansea (1st Morriston) Scout Group are due to be toasting marshmallows and have a stall selling wooden Christmas decorations they’ve made.
Morriston Ladies Choir are set to lead carol singing that the public can join in the Tabernacle. Tabernacle Morriston Choir will join the carol singing and perform on Woodfield Street.
Morriston Camera Club plan an exhibition of their work in Tabernacle.
Glantawe Lions plan to welcome Santa to the Tabernacle grotto and will judge a Victorian shop window dressing competition. There will be stalls in the grounds of St David’s Church.
The council is regenerating a wider area of the Lower Swansea Valley. Work to open a new base for drinks firm Penderyn is well advanced at the site of the former Hafod Morfa Copperworks, pontoons are planned for the riverbank at the copperworks and New Zealand firm Skyline plans to develop a visitor attraction offering – among other things – cable car rides from a Landore to the top of Kilvey Hill.
Morriston Victorian Christmas 10am-3pm, Saturday November 26. Those wishing to take part should email Nathan James – [email protected].
