New, state-of-the-art sports facilities have opened in Cardiff as part of the Llanrumney Sports Campus (LSC) project, with the help of a £3.5m finance package from HSBC UK.

The £8m LSC project, a collaboration between Cardiff City House of Sport, Cardiff University, Cardiff City Football Club (CCFC) and Cardiff Council, saw the development of a 16-acre sports centre. The HSBC UK funding went towards the creation of this complex, which will be available to local football, rugby, baseball, and cricket teams to use.

A significant part of the development is a 10-acre playing area and community pavilion. This facility, which is due to become a Community Sports Trust, will actively grow female participation in football and support the progression of local teams by providing first-class facilities.

As well as the community pavilion, the facilities feature a tier-two 3G football pitch, a floodlit 3G IRB-standard rugby pitch and a floodlit IRB/ FIFA-standard 3G pitch for both football and rugby.

Steve Borley, Director at Cardiff City House of Sport, commented: “This project has been a culmination of years of hard work and collaboration, so we’re very proud to see it come to fruition. It’s very important to us these facilities are used to enrich the local community by developing grassroots sports for all abilities and genders, enabling teams to prosper in an environment where they feel at home.

“We’re grateful for HSBC UK’s support in providing the finance package that allowed us to invest in these facilities, as this wouldn’t have been possible without it.”

Simon Williams, Relationship Director at HSBC UK South West & Wales, commented: “We’re delighted to be able to support the development of the Llanrumney Sports Campus project for our long-term client. This is a major investment in sport and leisure facilities in Cardiff, and will ensure local and elite teams are training and developing in the best possible conditions. We are confident the project will make a positive impact on the local community for many years to come.”
