Youngsters from across age groups at Valley Ravens Rugby Club are set to benefit after local energy company, Pennant Walters, has provided money which will fund winter training costs for all players.
With the dark nights quickly approaching, the club, sought to move weekly sessions to floodlit and indoor facilities so that the 160 registered youngsters don’t miss out on training opportunities during the winter months. Also mindful of not increasing fees for parents, the Club looked to Pennant Walters for its for support.
The company has provided £2,100 to cover the winter venue hire from a fund linked to the construction of the new, but standalone, Pant y Wal Extension Wind Farm, adjacent to Ogwr Valley.
Kathryn Mainwaring, Valley Ravens Club Secretary, said:
“We have been lucky to have received financial support from the windfarm a few years back and this latest support is fantastic.
“We want to encourage new players to come and join us and the winter venue hire enables us to continue to do so during the cold, wet months.
“We are so mindful that sport should be inclusive, and we didn’t want to put up our fees unnecessarily. Receiving this money from Pennant Walters ensures that we can keep our costs low so that more people locally can join us to play the great game of rugby.”
Valley Ravens train each Wednesday in both Ysgol Bryn Castell in Bryncethin and Betws Primary School and wants to encourage anyone locally thinking about taking up the game to get in contact.

“We’ve got a fantastic set up and have players from across the Ogmore and Garw Valleys playing for us. Rugby is a great team sport, and we’d love to see more youngsters get involved.”
Pennant Walters managing director, Dale Hart, said:
“We are proud to support the growth of the rugby club. It’s doing a great job of providing regular coaching and sporting opportunities to so many youngsters locally and we can see how this funding is helping them to keep costs low for their members.
“Our wind energy project community fund exists to make a difference to the local communities in which we work and we’re happy this money benefit so many local people.”
