Cardiff Metropolitan University has won a prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Award, honouring outstanding work in developing an anti-racist learning model for education professionals.

Diversity and Anti-Racist Professional Learning (DARPL), the key national provider in Wales which rethinks anti-racist professional leadership in education, picked up the award for Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

DARPL, developed by Cardiff Met, comprises professional learning provision and resources which support the implementation of the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan set-out by Welsh Government.

DARPL was established by Chantelle Haughton, Principal Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Its vision is to ensure that those working within education – from childcare and early years to senior leaders – are challenged, supported and resourced with tools for anti-racist leadership and practice.

The judges said the initiative “demonstrated the power of cross-sector collaboration through partnership working to achieve inclusive and sustainable change – a source of inspiration for all of us who are committed to this vital agenda”.

The THE Awards celebrate the achievements of universities across the UK and Ireland, honouring the world-leading research and outstanding individuals making a difference in higher education. The awards ceremony took place at the Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool.

Speaking after the awards, President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff Metropolitan University, Professor Cara Aitchison said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the team behind DARPL and demonstrates the outstanding work happening at our University in driving change to become an anti-racist nation. As a values-driven organisation, this award is testament to the impact that our colleagues are having within education and our wider society.”
