Thomas Gwyn Griffiths, 78, from Duffryn Rhondda, was found guilty of two accounts of sexual assault by penetration of a child under 13, and an additional count of sexual touching over a child under 13. His offences took place across a period of two years.

Griffiths’ offences were discovered when his victim made disclosures of his actions whilst in school.

This week he has been sentenced to 15 years in prison plus one year on license in the community. He is to serve a minimum of two thirds of his custodial sentence before he will be eligible for parole.

    Detective Inspector Sharon Gill-Lewis said:

“My thoughts remain firmly with the victim and their family, who have gone through such a terrible ordeal at the hands of Thomas Gwyn Griffiths.

“These complex investigations can take time, and the victim has shown immense patience, bravery, and courage whilst the investigation was ongoing. Detective Constable Chris Medlicott has worked tirelessly to ensure that the victim received justice after being subjected to horrendous acts from a predatory individual.

“Child sexual abuse is often a hidden crime. We work hard to ensure that the voice of the child is heard. I hope this sentence sends a strong message that South Wales Police will pursue all available lines of enquiry to ensure that we bring justice to victims of serious sexual and indecent assaults.”
