Exciting plans to re-develop Cyfarthfa Castle are currently underway.

Following publication of ‘The Cyfarthfa Plan’ in 2021, the Council has been working in partnership with the Cyfarthfa Foundation to explore approaches to developing Cyfarthfa and preserving the site for future generations.

The development will happen in several phases, with phase one to preserve and enhance the ‘Mansion’ side of the building – where Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery is housed – currently being considered. The plans will include external works to the building and the maximisation of internal space, while retaining the Museum and supporting the continuation of activities already being delivered there. This will include extensive consultation with schools and the local community.

Councillor Jamie Scriven, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Cyfarthfa Castle is and iconic building and known locally as the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of Merthyr Tydfil.

“It’s a hugely important part of the rich heritage and history of, not only Merthyr Tydfil, but South Wales, so it’s crucial that we protect and preserve it. I’m thrilled to see these plans start to take shape.”
