New detox unit opens at Brynawel House to support addiction recovery

On 8 May, Brynawel House marked a significant milestone in its mission to provide comprehensive addiction recovery services with the official opening of Meadow Lodge, a purpose-built detox unit on its grounds in Llanharan.

Meadow Lodge is a four-bedroom unit designed to provide a calm, supportive environment for individuals at the critical first stage of their recovery journey – detoxification. With scenic views across rolling green fields and access to tranquil outdoor spaces, the lodge offers a safe, clinically supervised setting where guests can begin to heal.

Meadow House was officially opened by Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sarah Murphy. She said: “I’m very pleased to officially open Meadow Lodge and am sure it will make a massive difference to the lives of so many people.
“Brynawel House has provided excellent rehabilitation services for nearly 50 years, and these new facilities will further strengthen this work.

“Welsh Government has invested £800,000 in the development of Brynawel House as we recognise the importance of improving support services for people struggling with substance misuse.”

Detoxification is often the necessary first step before entering residential rehab, but the shortage of NHS detox beds has created barriers for many seeking timely treatment. Meadow Lodge directly addresses this gap, enabling Brynawel House to deliver a seamless, on-site pathway from detox through to therapy and long-term recovery.

The event brought together health professionals, support workers, and stakeholders to celebrate the expansion of services at Wales’ foremost rehabilitation centre.

Sue Gwyn, Chief Executive Officer of Brynawel House, said: “Addiction doesn’t wait and neither should recovery.

“Meadow Lodge allows us to provide immediate, life-changing support, removing a major hurdle that so many people face. This is more than a building – it’s hope in action.”

Brynawel House continues to lead in holistic addiction treatment, offering personalised programmes that include counselling, group therapy, dog-assisted therapy, and aftercare. Meadow Lodge further strengthens its role as a sanctuary of healing and transformation.
