South Wales Police is urging people to be vigilant after a man from Riverside, Cardiff, was scammed out of thousands of pounds by somebody pretending to be a police officer.

The victim, a man in his 80s, had £16,000 stolen on his own doorstep on Wednesday, September 3, after scammers phoned him earlier in the day. The callers claimed to be police officers and instructed him to withdraw the cash, which was then taken by a man who arrived at his home.

The suspect was described as being black, with medium-length afro hair, and a beard which was covered by a medical mask. He was wearing a blue long-sleeved top with dark trousers.

Two similar incidents were reported to police yesterday in Fairwater and Canton. On those occasions, the intended victims became suspicious and contacted South Wales Police before any money was handed over.

Officers believe further people may be targeted and are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly looking out for elderly or vulnerable relatives who may be at risk.
