    Newport Council relaunches fund to revitalise city centre buildings

    Newport Council relaunches fund to revitalise city centre buildings

    Newport City Council is relaunching the placemaking fund offering financial assistance towards schemes to breathe new life into vacant or underused properties in the city centre.
    Past schemes successful in securing this funding have included 3-4 North Street where vacant space was refurbished into new offices and Kings Sports Bar located in the Station Quarter.

    Funding for the grants has been made possible thanks to the Welsh government’s transforming towns programme.

    Cabinet secretary for housing and local government, Jayne Bryant, said: “When we bring empty buildings back to life it creates jobs, attracts new businesses, and gives people better places to live and work.

    “The Welsh government has increased funding and grant allowances to make regeneration projects more accessible to communities across Wales, enabling us to build on the successes we have already achieved.

    “Our town and city centres are the beating hearts of our communities and by investing in them, the Welsh government is investing in Wales’s future.”

    Councillor James Clarke, cabinet member for regeneration and business growth, said: “I’m pleased that we are once again able to offer significant funding towards projects to revitalise empty properties in the city centre.

    “This could be for vacant commercial units on the ground floor or to create new homes on the upper floors of properties.

    “The scheme is designed to stimulate further private investment in the city centre but recipients of the grant will have to prove they have a serious intention and a commitment to deliver their project.

    “It is just one of the ways we are helping businesses, particularly in the city centre, from financial support for new and growing SMEs to business rate relief schemes.”
