A new active travel route in Gowerton has been officially opened, providing residents, cyclists, walkers and rail passengers with safer and easier access to the railway station and the wider community.
The much-anticipated link from Fairwood Terrace to Gowerton railway station is now available for public use, following formal approval from Network Rail.
The project, funded by Welsh Government with support from Transport for Wales, marks another significant step forward for sustainable travel in Swansea.
Children from Gowerton Primary School joined Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council, along with representatives from local cycling groups, as well as transport officers in the council and Transport for Wales.
Council Leader Rob Stewart said: “This new link is a fantastic addition to our active travel network and a real boost for Gowerton.
“It will help residents, commuters and visitors travel more easily and safely, while supporting our commitment to a greener, healthier Swansea.
“We’re proud to deliver projects that make a positive difference to people’s everyday lives and encourage more walking and cycling for all.”
He added: “Swansea’s active travel network now covers over 127km of walking and cycling routes, connecting communities and providing better access to employment, education and key services.
“No one in Swansea lives far from the network, and we want to encourage everyone to make use of these routes for their everyday journeys.”
Cllr Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, added: “The benefits of our active travel routes for residents and tourism are clear.
“Getting out and about on our active travel routes on foot or by bike helps improve health and wellbeing and cuts congestion and carbon emissions by reducing reliance on cars, especially for shorter journeys.
“This latest link isn’t only a short local connection, it’s an excellent link all the way from Pontarddulais, through Gorseinon and Gowerton and beyond.
“It gives residents, commuters and visitors safer and easier access to the station and wider community. It is another big step forward for sustainable travel in Swansea.”
