Young boys who lent a bike to an officer in pursuit of a fleeing offender have been commended for their actions.
Harry Jones and Jack Clews, aged 11 and 10 respectively, and who both live in Rhyl, were recently riding their bikes through the town.
Shortly after finishing school, the pair were making their way towards the Marsh Tracks Bike Park when they encountered PC Hart.
He and a fellow officer were involved in a foot chase, pursuing two males suspected of shoplifting and drug possession.
PC Hart stopped suddenly to speak with the boys and asked if he could borrow one of their bikes to hasten his pursuit.
“The suspects had been pursued halfway across the town by this point”, said PC Hart.
“I explained the situation to the boys and asked if I could use one of their bikes to catch up with the men who were running away.
“Thankfully, they agreed. I promised that I’d return the bike safely and asked them to meet me back at Rhyl station later that afternoon.”
Once astride the bike, PC Hart was able to gain ground on the suspect who was arrested close to John Street.
The second suspect was subsequently detained by other officers a short distance away.
PC Hart then headed back to the station and duly returned the bike to the boys, who were thanked and given a tour of the station.
The tour included visits to the cells and CCTV monitoring room, and an insight into the riot gear and police vans used by officers.
In recognition of their willingness to assist the police, the boys were each presented with a Citizen Award.
PC Hart added: “It was great to see two young lads in Rhyl who were happy to help the police out.
“I told them they were both examples of great young men.
“Without their help, this arrest may never have happened – so all credit to Harry and Jack for allowing me to take a bike in these circumstances.
“The Citizen Award is just a small token of our appreciation, and recognition of the boys’ selfless and public-spirited actions.”
Harry’s mum, Jade, said: “I’d like to thank the officers for arranging for the boys to come into the station this week.
“They absolutely loved it, and Harry hasn’t stopped talking about it.
“I’m sure it’s something that both boys will always remember.”
