Bridgend County Borough Council has set out a new Empty Homes Strategy to further reduce the number of long-term empty residential properties and bring them back into use.
The strategy for 2025-2030 has now been approved by the council’s Cabinet and was shaped through public consultation with input from residents, landlords and property owners.
It builds on the progress made under the previous plan and focuses on early engagement, financial support and stronger enforcement. It also includes a detailed Empty Property Action Plan, ensuring delivery through a coordinated approach across council departments and external partners.
The strategy also contributes to the Council’s wider goals, including increasing the supply of affordable housing, tackling homelessness, regenerating town centres, and supporting climate action by reusing existing buildings and improving their energy efficiency.
Progress will be monitored through annual reviews, with a full assessment planned for 2030 to ensure the strategy remains effective and responsive to local needs.
“This new strategy sets out a clear plan to bring more homes back into use, support regeneration, and make the best use of our existing housing. It also supports our climate goals by promoting the reuse of buildings and improving energy efficiency. “Steady progress has been made with over 230 empty homes bought back into use since 2021/22 and in 2024/25 alone over 300 site visits took place, 16 enforcement notices were issued and three prosecutions were completed. “I’d encourage anyone who owns an empty residential property to make the most of the opportunities and support available to help bring their property back into use.”
