New digital trail brings Abertillery’s history to life

Abertillery has a new way to explore its proud past! Pupils from Abertillery 3-16 Learning Campus helped launch an exciting digital history trail this week, inviting locals and visitors to discover the stories behind the town’s landmarks.

Commissioned by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the trail uses the History Points platform to guide walkers on a circular route featuring 10 fascinating sites—from historic buildings to striking artworks.

Along the way, pupils uncovered surprising facts, like the town library’s former life as Trinity Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, where the foundation stone was laid in 1877 by Jane Jones—one of Abertillery’s earliest residents and a trailblazing businesswoman.

Cllr John Morgan, Cabinet Member for Economy and Place, said:

“Abertillery is known for its mining heritage, but its history is also full of inspiring stories—people who fought for workers’ rights, better healthcare, and the vote. Strong women like Beatrice Green, Thora Silverthorn, and Jane Jones shaped this town when politics and business were dominated by men. We hope this trail will spark curiosity and pride in our community.”

The new trail is part of a wider effort to attract visitors and boost town centres, with similar routes now available in Ebbw Vale and more coming soon.
