Residents included in a trial soft plastic kerbside recycling scheme in Swansea can continue using the service in 2026.

Swansea Council has been trialling the soft plastic collections scheme since April 2025, offering 20,000 households across the city.

A decision has now been made to extend the trial until June 2026.

So far, the council has collected over 70 tonnes of soft plastic from residents, which may otherwise have ended up in black bags.

Data on the trial is being collated by Welsh Government and will help inform their decisions on how best to roll out similar schemes across other towns and cities in Wales in future.

Cyril Anderson, Cabinet Member for Community, said: “The trial so far has been a really great success story. Residents have got on board with it and have quickly seen the value in using the recycling service and reducing the amount of household waste they put in the black bag.

“Our plan is to continue the trial into the new year and give residents in the trial areas the opportunity to use the blue bags until June.”

Residents living outside trial areas can recycle their plastics at the collection points in supermarket stores.

Residents in the trial areas who require more bags can request a delivery by emailing [email protected] or phoning 01792 635600.

You can check if you live in a trial area by searching your postcode at www.swansea.gov.uk/recyclingsearch which displays a ‘Blue bag trial area’ note for those included.
