Construction will soon be underway on a new skate and wheeled sports facility at Mynydd Newydd in Penlan, marking another milestone in Swansea Council’s £3m investment to improve facilities for young people and wheeled sports enthusiasts across the city.

Canvas Spaces Ltd has been appointed as contractor for the scheme, which will deliver a modern, inclusive space for wheeled sports.

Work is progressing on a number of new and upgraded skate and wheeled sports facilities throughout Swansea.

Bendcrete Ltd will carry out works at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill, where construction is due to begin in early March. Work is also already underway at Victoria Park.

These projects form part of an investment that will ensure most residents won’t have to travel more than two miles to reach a new or improved skate, BMX or wheeled sports site.

Earlier consultation has shaped the designs – which the council has developed in partnership with an expert company called Curve Studio,

Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “Skateboarding, BMX and wheeled sports play a huge role in active lifestyles across Swansea, and we’re committed to supporting that by delivering modern, well-designed facilities in communities across the city.

“This investment is about creating welcoming spaces that young people, families and enthusiasts of all ages can enjoy, and it’s great to see work now moving forward on several more sites.

“We’ve worked closely with Curve Studio and local communities to make sure these facilities reflect what people actually want, and we’ll continue to keep residents informed as projects progress.”

Major upgrades have already been completed at Coed Bach in Pontarddulais and Melin Mynach in Gorseinon, with further schemes planned across Swansea.

These include a BMX-focused facility at Gowerton’s Elba sports complex, an improved skatepark at Ynystawe, a small cycling facility in Blaenymaes, a new pump track in Bishopston, refurbishment of the existing pump track at Clyne Valley, and the addition of a junior pump track in Gorseinon.
