Demolition contractors have moved on to the former Daniel James Community School site in Mynydd-bach.
They will also demolish the neighbouring buildings once occupied by Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tirdeunaw.
Swansea Council and the Welsh Government are jointly funding the work and Tom Prichard Contracting Ltd has been appointed to carry out the demolition which is expected to take around six months to complete.
There are plans to build a new modern school for Bishop Vaughan Catholic School on the Mynydd-bach site in the future.
The new build for Bishop Vaughan will involve significant funding under the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
Although agreed in principle it will need further approvals before construction begins.
Bishop Vaughan will remain at its current location without any disruption to pupils and staff until the new school build is ready to be occupied.
Pupils and staff will then benefit from significantly better facilities for learning, sport and recreation.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Robert Smith, said: “The demolition of these empty, outdated buildings that are no longer fit for purpose is a big step forwarded for our future plans for Bishop Vaughan.
“Working with colleagues in Welsh Government, we are seeing record investment in our school buildings in Swansea.
“More than £400m is earmarked for the next phase of investment to create state-of-the-art facilities at many of our schools and to give pupils the best possible support to reach their full potential.”
