Work could begin on major improvements to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe this summer.
At their meeting this week cabinet members in Swansea have committed up to £32m for the scheme which is subject to final approval from Welsh Government and planning.
The investment will include the refurbishment of part of the school, a brand new teaching block for the sixth form, improved facilities for pupils with additional learning needs, new sports facilities including an all-weather surface and improved vehicular access and parking
It will improve the learning environment for pupils and staff while increasing capacity at the school.
The new sixth form facilities will enable more pupils to continue their education through the medium of Welsh.
The scheme will be jointly funded by the council and Welsh Government under its Sustainable Communities for Learning programme.
If final approval is granted by Welsh Government, a contractor will be appointed with construction scheduled to begin this summer.
The work is expected to take around 22 months to complete and will be done in phases.
Council Leader Rob Stewart said: “Working with colleagues in Welsh Government we have seen record investment in school buildings and infrastructure in communities across Swansea.
“We’ve committed to investing more than £400m for the current programme in schools in Swansea which is providing state-of-the-art facilities and giving thousands of young people the very best opportunity to reach their full potential.”
There has been comprehensive consultation with the school and Freedom Leisure, which operates the neighbouring Penlan Leisure Centre, throughout the design stage to ensure that the investment not only maximises educational benefits but also meets the needs of the community.
This will continue during construction.
Cabinet Member for Education, Robert Smith, said: “I’m very pleased that we are getting close to work starting at Bryn Tawe to improve facilities for thousands of children now and in to the future.
“The new teaching block, which will be our first net zero carbon in operation building, will provide more suitable accommodation for pupils with additional learning needs and will also benefit sixth form students, encouraging more of them to continue with their education through the medium of Welsh.
“We have some really ambitious proposals for the coming years under the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and I’m grateful as always to our partners in the Welsh Government for their support for what we are achieving here in Swansea.”
