Businesses in North Wales are being urged to stay vigilant after a number of counterfeit £20 notes were reportedly used in Pwllheli.

North Wales Police say they are investigating five separate incidents that took place on Tuesday, March 17, involving suspected fake notes. All of the notes are believed to carry the same serial number, raising concerns that more could be in circulation.

Officers are now working to identify those responsible and prevent further financial losses to local businesses.

A spokesperson for the force said enquiries are ongoing and encouraged retailers to carefully check all cash payments, particularly £20 notes.

The Bank of England is advising businesses and the public to check key security features on every note. This includes feeling the texture of the paper, looking for the hologram and checking the metallic thread.

Anyone who suspects they have been handed a counterfeit note is advised not to accept it and to report the incident to North Wales Police.

Police are also appealing for information that could assist with their investigation. Anyone with details is asked to call 101 quoting reference O040139.

More guidance on how to identify genuine bank notes is available via the Bank of England website.
