Caerphilly County Borough Council has officially opened a new pupil support centre and multi-use games area (MUGA) at Islwyn High School, marking a major investment in education and community wellbeing.
The new facilities were formally opened by the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council at a ceremony attended by the Chair of Governors, school leaders, pupils, partners and stakeholders who played a key role in bringing the project to fruition.
The purpose-built pupil support centre has been developed to meet the changing needs of learners, particularly in response to challenges emerging since the COVID-19 pandemic. It will provide a safe, nurturing and focused environment for pupils who require additional support, alongside a dedicated space for multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with staff.
Alongside the support centre, the new MUGA provides modern, accessible outdoor facilities that will benefit both pupils and the wider community by promoting health, wellbeing and physical activity.
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Leader of Caerphilly Council, said “It gives me great pleasure to be here today to formally open Islwyn High School’s new pupil support unit and multi-use games area.
“This project is closely linked to our flagship mixed-tenure development at Oakdale Place and demonstrates how our investment in housing and community infrastructure goes hand in hand.
“As we deliver new homes, it is equally important that we invest in the facilities and services that help our communities to thrive. These new facilities will support pupils and bring wider benefits for the local community for years to come.”
Gavin Bryce, Chair of Governors at Islwyn High School, added “I am delighted to be at Islwyn today for the official opening of the pupil support centre, an achievement that has been many years in the making.
“This centre reflects the collective commitment of many partners, including the Local Authority, governing body and school staff, as well as the invaluable support of the Council’s estates team and contractors.
“It will play a vital role in supporting our learners, helping them to build the skills, confidence and resilience they need to succeed, and ultimately improving their life chances.”
