A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for thousands of customers across parts of Rhondda Cynon Taffollowing an issue at Welsh Water’s Maerdy Water Treatment Works.
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water confirmed the issue affected the chemical dosing process at the treatment works, but said operational teams have now fixed the fault and water from the site is re-entering the network.
Despite the repair, the boil water notice remains in place as a precaution while further testing and essential work continues to ensure water quality standards are fully met before normal supply resumes.
Customers are being advised to boil tap water before drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food or making ice until further notice.
The notice affects customers living in the following areas:
Blaenllechau, Bryngolau, Cymmer, Dinas, Edmondstown, Ferndale, Hopkinstown, Llwyncelyn, Maerdy, Tylorstown, Penrhys, Pontygwaith, Porth, Pwll Gwaun, Pantygraigwen, Pontypridd – Treforest, Trebanog, Rhiwgarn, Tonyrefail, Tyn Y Bryn, Trehafod, Wattstown, Williamstown and Ynyshir.
Welsh Water said impacted customers are being contacted directly by text message.
Public Health Wales is also urging residents to continue drinking water during the current hot weather to stay hydrated, using boiled and cooled water where necessary. Officials added that boiled water remains safe to use for preparing infant formula.
To support affected communities, Welsh Water has opened a third bottled water station at Rhondda Sports Centre in Pentre.
