Newport City Council has begun a summer programme of surface treatment works on 15 roads as part of its Fixing Our Roads initiative.
The work forms part of the council’s programme, which has allocated around £20 million towards tackling potholes across the city’s road network.
Rather than full resurfacing, the selected roads will receive surface treatments designed to prolong their lifespan. The council says the roads chosen are currently in better condition than those requiring complete resurfacing, and the preventative work will help keep them in good condition for longer.
The programme has been scheduled for the summer months as the treatments require warm, dry weather. To maximise efficiency, the work will be completed in one block.
The roads due to receive surface treatment are:
- A468 Caerphilly Road (20mph at Rhiwderin to Ffos-Y-Fern Junction)
- A468 Caerphilly Road (Machen Farm to Railway Overbridge)
- A48 Chepstow Road (from entrance to The Learning Tree Day Nursery to Old Chepstow Road junction)
- A48 Chepstow Road (from Magor Road junction to Pencoed Lane junction)
- A48 Newport Road (Coach & Horses entrance to the boundary)
- B4237 The Coldra (No.57 to No.11 The Coldra)
- B4245 Magor Road (part)
- B4596 Caerleon Road (Caerleon Bridge to No.574 Caerleon Road)
- Caerleon Road (Church Road junction to Richmond Road)
- Catsash Road (Belmont Hill junction to Old Roman Road junction)
- Goldcliff Road and Nash Road (from Meadows Road junction)
- North Row (Green Street junction to Cock Street junction)
- Old Roman Road (Catsash Road junction to Tregarn Road junction)
- Ridgeway and Allt-Yr-Yn Avenue
- Usk Road, Caerleon (from B4236 Mill Street junction to the boundary)
Work started on Monday 13 July and is expected to continue until mid August.
Each location will first undergo pre patching work before the surface treatments are applied. Pre patching will take place overnight between 8pm and 5am, while surface treatment works will be carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and again from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.
Most roads will remain open while work is underway, with lane closures and temporary traffic lights in operation. A small number of roads, mainly in rural areas, will need to close during the works.
The council has warned that the programme will remain flexible. Contractors may begin work earlier than planned on some roads if possible, while poor weather could delay the schedule.
Residents are also being advised that the work may generate noise and dust, although efforts will be made to minimise disruption. Drivers are asked to avoid parking on affected roads when work is due to take place.
Advance warning signs will be placed in affected areas, with the latest updates also shared on the council’s social media channels and the Fixing Our Roads programme webpage.
The council is thanking residents and visitors in advance for their patience while the improvement works are carried out over the summer.
