Emergency services remain at the scene of a large industrial fire at Llantrisant Recycling Centre, with nearby residents urged to keep their windows and doors closed because of smoke.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) said crews were called to the incident at 2.05am, with a significant emergency response now in place.

A total of eight fire appliances, four water bowsers, an aerial ladder platform and a range of specialist equipment have been deployed to tackle the blaze.

SWFRS is working closely with South Wales Police and Public Health Wales to help ensure public safety.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Members of the public are urged to avoid the area to allow emergency services to carry out their work. Due to smoke in the vicinity, residents are also advised to keep windows and doors closed.”

South Wales Police has also confirmed a number of road closures are in place while the incident is dealt with.

A police spokesperson said: “We’re at the scene of a incident at Llantrisant Recycling Centre, Tonyrefail.

“The road is currently closed in both directions between Heol Y Sarn with Ffordd Pritchard and Llantrisant Road junction with Heol Ddu.

“It is expected to remain closed for some time; please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. We’re grateful for your patience.”

Earlier, firefighters also asked members of the public not to fly personal drones near the scene as emergency service drones are being used to support the response.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area until the incident has been brought under control. Further updates are expected as firefighting operations continue.
