Around 40 commercial vehicles were stopped and inspected during a multi agency road safety operation in North Wales, with officers uncovering a range of serious offences and defects.
The joint operation, carried out on Tuesday in the Ewloe area, involved North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit working alongside the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Officers targeted vans and heavy goods vehicles to assess their roadworthiness and ensure drivers were complying with road safety regulations.
The inspections uncovered a number of concerning issues, including:
- One vehicle seized after being driven without insurance
- Vehicles found with no valid MOT
- Six overloaded vehicles
- One vehicle assessed as being in a dangerous condition
- One driver caught driving without a valid digital tachograph card
- One driver found to have taken insufficient weekly rest
- One vehicle prohibited from continuing its journey because of faults, resulting in £3,000 in fines
- One HGV parked up and prohibited from moving for 45 hours due to multiple offences
- One man arrested after being identified as wanted on an extradition warrant
Sergeant Emma Birrell, from North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit, said: “We regularly undertake operations like this to increase road safety, identifying vehicles that fail to meet basic road safety standards.
“The vehicles we focus on do a lot of miles, and therefore regular maintenance is vital. Some of the vehicles assessed were of such a poor standard, they were immediately taken off the road to prevent a potential collision or injury to the driver and other motorists.
“We will continue to undertake enforcement action to ensure that everyone using our road network does so safely and legally.”
North Wales Police said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve road safety by removing unsafe vehicles from the roads and ensuring commercial drivers comply with legal requirements.
