Wales is set for a fresher spell of weather over the coming days, with sunny spells and scattered showers giving way to rain and stronger winds towards the weekend.

The Met Office forecast for Wednesday says there will be a mixture of sunshine and scattered showers across Wales.

Sunshine is expected to turn increasingly hazy later in the afternoon before outbreaks of rain move in from the west during the evening.

Temperatures will remain around average for the time of year, with winds becoming lighter and a maximum temperature of 17°C.

    Heavy rain possible overnight

Cloud will thicken and lower from the west on Wednesday night, bringing outbreaks of rain across the country.

The rain could become locally heavy during the early hours, while conditions will also turn breezier.

Despite the unsettled weather, it will remain relatively mild, with temperatures falling no lower than around 13°C.

    Brighter weather returns on Thursday

Thursday is expected to get off to a cloudy and wet start in some areas, but the rain will gradually clear towards the southeast.

This will leave behind a mostly dry day with plenty of sunny spells across Wales.

There remains the chance of an isolated shower around northern and western coastal areas, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 18°C.

Wet and windy weather for the weekend

Conditions are forecast to become more unsettled again on Friday, with further wet weather arriving during the afternoon.

The Met Office outlook for Saturday and Sunday points to mostly cloudy conditions, accompanied by patchy rain and stronger winds.

Areas to the east of high ground are expected to see the best chance of brighter conditions.
