Firefighters from Red Watch, Pontypridd, have taken part in a training exercise with staff and students at Coleg y Cymoedd’s Nantgarw campus, based on a simulated electric vehicle fire in the campus car park.

In the scenario, smoke spread from the fire to the building. Fake smoke was used, giving firefighters the opportunity to practise their operational response while campus staff tested their evacuation procedures.

Some members of staff took on the role of casualties, allowing crews and those on campus to practise how they would respond to people needing assistance during a real incident.

Appliances from Pontypridd, Cardiff Central and Ely attended the exercise, and the building was evacuated within minutes. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said students followed the procedures in place.

Group Manager Jason Lamport said: “Training exercises like this are invaluable because they give our crews the opportunity to practise their response in a realistic and challenging environment, while also allowing staff and students to test their own emergency procedures.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took part and helped make the exercise a success. We hope this is the start of an even stronger partnership with Coleg y Cymoedd and the University of South Wales, giving us more opportunities to work together to help keep our communities safe.”
