A 346-mile cycling challenge from Cardiff to Paris has raised over £100,000 for City Hospice.
Forty-two cyclists, including Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams, set off from the hospice in Whitchurch on 17 September. Their four-day route took in Frome, Portsmouth, Caen and Evreux before finishing in the centre of Paris on 20 September.
The challenge was organised by Carter Lauren Construction, longstanding supporters of City Hospice, and was the firm’s fifth major fundraiser for the charity in recent years.
Funds raised will help City Hospice continue providing specialist home-based palliative care and services including welfare advice, complementary therapies and counselling to patients and families in Cardiff.
Jon Folkes, Senior Contract Manager at Carter Lauren Construction, said: “City Hospice’s compassionate care makes a real difference to patients and families during some of life’s most challenging moments, which is why Carter Lauren is proud to support the charity through our fundraising challenges.
“Cardiff to Paris was a tough ride, but the determination, teamwork and resilience shown by every cyclist was outstanding. The knowledge that every donation pledged would support the remarkable work of City Hospice, combined with the camaraderie formed over the four days, kept us all moving forward mile after mile to achieve our goal. To be able to raise over £100,000 for the charity is just fantastic!”
Nicky Piper MBE, Corporate Partnerships Manager at City Hospice, said: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Carter Lauren Construction for organising the best charity event I have ever been on. It was gruelling at times, but the friendships I have made and the fun times we had made it all worth it.
“To raise over £100,000 for City Hospice was amazing. We are truly grateful to all the sponsors and cyclists for their fundraising. The memory of cycling around the Arc de Triomphe, and being clapped and cheered by hundreds of people, will stay with me forever.”
