A Cardiff pop-up men’s choir formed in September is preparing for a gala concert at the Dora Stoutzker Hall at 7.30pm on 31 October to raise funds for Prostate Cymru.
The Men United in Song Choir has about 40 members, many of whom have never sung in a choir before. Project leader Guy Edwards says he believes this is the first time the model has been run in Cardiff.
Over a nine-week period the men have been learning a selection of songs. They will perform on their own and be joined on stage by Côr Meibion De Cymru, which is hosting the event, with members of its Cardiff rehearsal group acting as buddies.
The choir has already raised more than £6,000 for Prostate Cymru via JustGiving. Some men in the choir are living with prostate cancer or have been deeply affected by it. One in eight men in Wales will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives, the release says.
The concert will feature Welsh National Opera’s Ceri Heddwyn Davies (tenor) as principal soloist, with Lauren Elizabeth Williams (soprano) and Connor Horton (baritone). Garry Owen of the BBC will compere. Music will be directed by D Huw Rees, with principal accompanist Siân Gwawr Davies.
Guy Edwards said: “it’s amazing what the men have achieved in such a short time – they have all been working really hard to get this ready”
Tickets priced £12 to £17 are available via the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama website.
