GMB Calls for ‘Urgent Clarification’ on Wylfa Nuclear Power Station

The consequences of not building Wyfla would be catastrophic for Wales and the UK’s future energy policy says GMB Union

GMB, the energy union, has called for urgent clarification from the government on the future of the Wyfla nuclear power station.

Reports suggest Hitachi is considering axing plans for the £16 billion plant in Wales.

The 2.9GW nuclear power station on Anglesey is next in line in the UK’s nuclear plans after Hinkley Point C.

For the 12 months from 7 March 2017, every one in 5.6 days was a low wind day (65 days in total) when the output of the installed and connected wind turbines in the UK produced less than 10% of their installed and connected capacity for more than half of the day. For 341 days in the year, solar output was below 10% of installed capacity for more than half of the day.

Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary, said:

“Reports Hitachi might pull out of the Wylfa project require urgent clarification and – if necessary –  immediate action by the Government.

“If true, the consequences would be catastrophic for Wales and the UK’s future energy policy.

“With coal and the existing nuclear fleet all going offline in the next decade or so, alternative reliable base load capacity from new nuclear is vital to keep the lights on and the economy functioning.

“This Government has a track record of dithering when it comes to our vital future energy needs.

“Now is not the time for anything other than immediate and decisive action – including stepping in and taking over the project if needed.”
