Welsh butcher, Tim Rowe, has become one of only 45 butchers in the UK to be awarded Institute of Meat (IoM) accredited Master Butcher status.

A meat consultant at Carmarthenshire-based Castell Howell Foods Ltd and a director of Celtic Pride Ltd – Tim received his award at the IoM’s annual prize-giving event in London.

The event, held by The Institute of Meat and The Worshipful Company of Butchers, has been running for over 27 years and celebrates the ‘best of the best’ in the meat and poultry industry.

An eighth-generation butcher, Tim was presented with his award by HRH The Princess Royal, who is a past Master of The Worshipful Company of Butchers and Fellow of The Institute of Meat.

IoM chief executive Keith Fisher, himself a fourth-generation Master Butcher, said, “Butchery is a centuries-old craft and to become an IoM accredited Master Butcher is the highest accolade in the profession. We only even consider applications from the most experienced and skilful butchers.”

Said Tim, who is now entitled to use the post-nominal letters MB.Inst.M, “My family have long been involved in farming and the meat industry, with myself being the eighth generation in fact. To receive this award, therefore, is a great honour, most particularly because it is conferred by my industry peers.”

In addition to his family background, his involvement in the agri-food industry continues through his work with, amongst others, Castell Howell, working with the company for 17 years’ helping to develop a range of bespoke meat products for its 4,000 plus foodservice customers.

This work, he adds, has “culminated in the development of the Celtic Pride beef scheme, and development of the bacon and ham production unit.”
