Newport’s well-being is a key priority for partnership

Newport City Council’s cabinet has endorsed a five-year plan to make the city a better place for those who live and work there.

The plan will now go to full council for approval on 24 April and the One Newport Public Services Board on 1 May.

One Newport Public Services Board (PSB) is a statutory body made up of the council, Natural Resources Wales, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and South Wales Fire and Rescue.

Invited partners also sit on the PSB including Coleg Gwent, the Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations and Gwent Police.

In line with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, a plan sets out the board’s priorities and actions for the next five years to improve the social, cultural, economic and environmental well-being of Newport now and in the future.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, leader of Newport City Council and the chair of One Newport PSB, said:

“The city has much to be proud of from hosting major international and sporting events; acclaimed regeneration and award-winning developments.

“It is also home to some cutting-edge technology businesses, major public service employers and has a growing reputation as a hotspot for economic growth.

“However, Newport still faces challenges, not least of which are the poverty and disadvantage still affecting some of our residents.

“One Newport has to tackle those issues, as well as low-skill levels, crime and antisocial behaviour, to make the city a better place for everyone by attracting, and retaining, people and employers.

“We will be working hard to ensure Newport has good jobs, excellent educational facilities, quality housing, attractive outdoor spaces, first rate transport, strong services and a thriving arts, sports and culture offering.

“To do this, all the partners on the board will work together, and involve our communities, to ensure we achieve those ambitions.”
