The Swansea Council-run venue has a number of casual trading pitches and they’re being offered at the bargain rental price to support the UK-wide Love Your Local Market celebration.

Would-be entrepreneurs can apply for a casual pitch to trade on any days Monday-Saturday from May 17-31.

Casual trader Lyn Mackay, who specialises in handmade jewellery and gifts, said: “People should give this a go! The market is a great place to be and will offer a strong indication of whether a living can be made with a special idea.”

Lyn, an entertainer and former teacher of Sketty, began trading on a casual pitch four months ago and has just launched a permanent stall – Pandora’s Box.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “We love Swansea Market and want it to be bustling with shoppers and traders as much as possible.

“There’s already a wonderful array of businesses there – now we’re giving others a big chance to test a new idea and see if they have the knack!

“Those who want to be part of it are only a phone call or web visit away from setting up shop and I encourage them to do exactly that.

“This offer comes at a time when Swansea is celebrating 50 years as a city and at a point when we can all look forward with optimism thanks to the exciting regeneration now under way across the city.”

Swansea Market Traders Federation chairman Chris Evans said: “We support the £10-a-day offer and the fresh mix it will bring to this wonderful venue at the heart of Swansea.

“We’re delighted that would-be traders are being given the chance. If they want to be part of it we’ll offer them a warm welcome!”

The Love Your Local Market celebration is being run by NABMA, the National Association of British Market Authorities.

It is being embraced by 24 countries and this year’s theme is Markets Close To Your Heart.

Swansea Market is the largest indoor market in Wales, an award winning, historic venue that offers tourists and residents a unique experience.

More than 100 stalls offer a huge variety of goods and is a haven for food lovers. A wide variety of fresh, local produce is accompanied by cafes and takeaways boasting temptations such as Japanese, Thai and Mexican cuisine.

The market is currently having a £200,000 lighting refit and remains open as usual – Monday-Friday 8am-5.30pm and Saturday 7.30am-5.30pm.
